Verlin and Billie Archer, the founders of The Bible Outlet, started their first Bible bookstore over thirty years ago. Their original store, The Book End, was opened in Albertville, Alabama in the Marshall County Mall in a store 400 square foot store in about 1968. The store later moved to the downtown Albertville mall. While the couple ran the bookstore, Mr. Archer together with support from the community operated Sand Mountain Christian Counseling. As a former pastor, Mr. Archer had a gift for helping people whether they were in the bookstore as a customer or in the office as a counseling client.
During the development of the outlet industry in Boaz, Mr. Archer opened a store in the downtown mall in Boaz. This was the beginning of their efforts in Boaz and the birth of The Bible Outlet. In this store, Mr. Archer began to change the way people shopped for Bibles. Bibles were previously kept behind a counter and the store clerk would show them to the customer. In The Bible Outlet, he placed on the shelves in the store so that people could look at them and hold them. As the outlet centers grew, the Bible Outlet moved into one of the larger shopping centers and grew to become one of the largest Christian bookstores in the Southeast. With the changes in the retail traffic in Boaz in recent years, the Bible Outlet has given its full attention to the local community and to the local churches.
The Bible Outlet remains a family operated business. The business is owned by Bill Elkins and consists of just the one store in Boaz. Mr. and Mrs. Archer both are still involved and work at the store as well as Bill Elkins their son-in-law, and Steve Archer, their son.
