Boaz Area Chamber of Commerce

General Description: The President of the Boaz Area Chamber of Commerce is the chief executive and administrative officer of the Chamber. He or she is appointed by the Board of Directors and serves at the pleasure of the Board. The individual is responsible to the Board of Directors for the full range of activities – coordination of the program of work; organizational structure and procedures; motivation of volunteers; and expenditures; employment, training, and supervision of staff; interpretation of policy; maintenance of quarters; long range planning; and other duties as directed by the Board of Directors.

Program of Work: Through the proper committee, the President is responsible for identification of Chamber and community needs and for the preparation of a program of work designed to meet these needs. This involves a constant evaluation of the program, with recommendation for change, as needed.

Chamber Structure and Procedures: The President must pay constant attention to the internal structure of the Chamber to ensure that the organization is effectively geared to function with maximum efficiency in the anticipation, identification and solution of Chamber/community problems. The President will recommend to the Board such changes in structure and procedures as are needed.

Motivation of Volunteers: Key to the effectiveness of the Chamber is the ability of the President to motivate and inspire volunteers to creative and fruitful action.

Income and Expenses: The President is responsible for developing the Chamber budget and relating budget to program goals. As approved by the Board, the President is responsible for all expenditures within the framework of the budget. The President will not make purchases of more than $500 without prior consent from Board. The President will prepare monthly financial statements of income and expenses. The President will ensure that financial records of the Chamber are audited annually. The President will seek maximum staff efficiency in all financial procedures.

Staff: The President is responsible for the employment and termination of all staff personnel with the approval of the Board, the assignment of their dues, the supervision of their work, and the establishment – within the framework of the approved budget – of the terms of their employment. As indicated by the program of work, the President creates such departments as are needed to implement the program. The President will develop and conduct continuing on-the-job training programs and will ensure participation in professional conferences, seminars and institutes as are needed to develop and maintain operations at peak efficiency.

Interpretation of Policy: The President will ensure the Chamber policy, as established by the Board, is properly recorded in minutes and indexes in the Office Policy Manual. The President will assist the Board, committees, members and the staff in interpretation of policy in relation to any given question or program. The President will assist the Chairman of the Board of Directors in preparation of statements of Chamber position on public issues.

Headquarters: As approved by the Board of Directors, the President is responsible for the location, design and maintenance of headquarters that will provide for an efficient operation and present an attractive “front door” to represent the Boaz area

Long-Range Planning: Under the direction of a constantly evolving Board of Directors and an annually changing roster of officers, the President is responsible for maintaining continuity and consistency in programming. Based on proper research of community needs, the President must anticipate emerging and long-range problems and recommend Chamber and community programs to meet such problems.


  • With the Board of Directors – The President must earn and maintain the respect and confidence of the Board, individually and collectively. The President is responsible for preparing an agenda, maintaining Board minutes and records, carrying out plans and programs of the Board in accordance with established policies, serving as representative of the Board for all contact with the Chamber staff, initiating programs for consideration.
  • With Chamber Members – The President must motivate members to support- personally and financially- an aggressive Chamber program. The President must analyze and interpret the needs of members and recommend revisions in the program of work to improve service and assistance to make membership more valuable. The President will entertain suggestions, proposals, and requests from the members and translate them into action consistent with the fundamental objectives and policies of the Chamber. The President will render such personal service to members as the occasion may require and time allow.
  • With The Staff - The President must lead the professional staff. Since the President is responsible for the employment and training of all staff members, the President assumes responsibility for their efficient performance of duty. As required by the program of work, in the President establishes appropriate departments and assigns duties accordingly. The President must create working conditions that are conducive to maximum performance and employee morale.
  • With The Community – The President represents the Chamber in meetings of local, state, and national organizations. He/She will work closely with Boaz Area Officials and other public and community leaders so as to better serve the needs of the Chamber, the City, and community. Through personal contacts with key community leaders, the individual must constantly strive to develop a better public understanding of the purpose and functions of the Chamber.
  • Personnel: The President is responsible for all employees of the Chamber.
  • Material or Products: Within budget allocation, the President is responsible for the purchase, storage, and use of all Chamber supplies and equipment. Supplies or equipment in excess of $500 must be approved by the Board of Directors prior to purchase or lease.
  • Money: The President is responsible for the income of the Chamber, including funds from other sources that are administered by the Chamber.
