Sylvan Learning Center

Sylvan Learning Center, the nation’s leader in supplemental education, opened in Boaz in 1996. It is locally owned and operated by Dr. Betty Walden and her daughter, Rhonda Smith. Dr.Walden and Rhonda bring over 35 years experience in education to their centers located across North Alabama. After being in both public and private education as both a teacher and an administrator, Dr. Walden, who holds various degrees in education including a Doctorate of Education from The University of Alabama, realized the value of offering extra help at an affordable cost to give students that individual help.

Rhonda, who also has a degree from the University of Alabama, joined the family business in 1994 after 8 years as a middle school teacher in Montgomery Alabama.

After five years of owning Sylvan Learning Centers in Decatur and Anniston, she wanted the same opportunities to be available to her hometown community.

“Sylvan is more than just a tutoring service. We provide homework help in various subject areas which include Reading, Math, and Language Arts for all ages,” states Rhonda.

Sylvan also provides test prep for the Graduation Exam and the ACT. Students have raised their ACT scores by 3-5 points which have enabled them to get scholarships that would not have been available to them.

Sylvan is best known for pinpointing the individual areas where the student is struggling and helping them to get on the A/B Honor Roll at school.

You can visit with them at their new location at The Shoppes of Boaz, located at 2073 Highway 431 or on the world wide web at www.sylvanlearning.com.
