WBSA hit the airwaves on October 1, 1959, known then as WAVC. Albert Vearl Cicero of Birmingham and Ken Sparks of Albertville were the owners at that time. The format was top 40 rock and easy listening.
In 1961, the station was purchased by Glenn Cornelius and L.D. Bentley of Oneonta. The call letters were changed to WBSA. Cornelius operated the station until 1982.
In 1982, WBSA was purchased by Lawrence Kennamer of Scottsboro and Bill Huber of Rainsville. The format was changed to southern gospel music, being the first station in Northeast Alabama with a total Christian format. That format remains today.
In 1995, WBSA was purchased by rev. Roger Watkins, a Baptist minister and Evangelist, Watkins broadcasting is still the current owner.
The current full time staff is Roger Watkins, Betty Watkins, Jo Johnson, Dale Johnson, Jim Hilley, Chris Watkins, Don Smith, James Cornelius and Chris Hallmark.
WBSA remains the only station within the Boaz city limits licensed by the federal communications commission. Recently, WBSA accommodated their listener’s request by staying live on the airwaves 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
WBSA is located at 1525 wills road in Boaz and can be reached at 593-4264. Listen on am 1300 to regular programming. Special programming includes call & tell Monday through Saturday from 8:30 am until 10:00 am, the prayer hour Monday through Friday from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm and on Saturdays from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, the gospel bluegrass gem show Monday through Friday from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm and the bible trivia/local talent time Monday through Friday from 5:25 pm until 6:00 pm. |
